Mitchell Wayne Richardson, Sr. passed away unexpectedly on July 16, 2025, in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Born on December 14, 1959, in Washington, DC, he was a man of many angles, each reflecting the deep love he held for his family and the resilience he showed throughout his life.

Known fondly as "Big Mitchell," he carved a significant niche not only in the lives of those he loved but also through his career as a Correctional Officer in Lorton, Virginia. A dedicated soldier, he served honorably in the United States Army, embodying the values of strength and duty. His proudest accomplishments resonated deeply with him, particularly being a father to his children, Mitchell Richardson Jr. "Little Mitchell", Shaunta Richardson "Baby Girl", and Christopher Richardson "Chris". Reconnecting with his children was a triumph and blessing that he cherished dearly, allowing him to restore family bonds that matter most in life.

Big Mitchell’s personality was unique and multifaceted; he showcased a stern and sometimes stubborn demeanor, yet this was always softened by his profound love for those around him. He had a silly sense of humor, often making others smile with his bluntness. His advice was straightforward-he believed in choosing peace, a mantra he frequently shared with his loved ones. Even in difficult times, Big Mitchell held firm to his belief in finding joy and contentment, often reminding others to enjoy life and pursue their happiness. Part of his contentment also included being in bed by 8pm.

His cooking skills were a source of pride and joy, and the last Thanksgiving dinner (prepared by him) was truly a feast to remember. He often bragged about his dishes and seasoning. He indulged in sharing culinary ideas, created heartfelt moments, and left a permanent impression on a lot of hearts. Big Mitchell was not a man of many words when it comes to talking on the phone. He would get his point across and give you approximately 3-5 minutes and that was it. His directness and tough love laced with his silly sense of humor made him one of a kind.

Over the last year, Big Mitchell and his "Baby Girl" (Shaunta) rebuilt their bond and promised to never let anything keep them apart. Prior to his passing, Big Mitchell expressed his love for his children and the importance of forgiveness, understanding and patience. He also shared his heartfelt sentiments to reconnect with his sons (Little Mitchell and Chris), to ensure they knew the depth of his love. Unfortunately, he didn't get the chance to tell them directly. He admired Little Mitchell's protective instinct for his siblings and often laughed because he realized they are so much alike. Big Mitchell loved the fact that Chris is an amazing father to his daughters and that he inherited his trait to debate about everything.

Big Mitchell leaves a legacy that will be cherished by his grandchildren—Kemonie Carter, Akeera Richardson, Orion Richardson, Lyric Bond, and Charli Richardson—as well as by numerous nieces and nephews. They will carry forward his teachings of love, resilience, and the importance of "choosing peace" and "standing on business" by any means.

As he embarks on his next journey, Big Mitchell is now at peace, having fought a good fight. His departure leaves a void in the lives of many, but the memories he created will forever resonate within their hearts. His loving spirit will continue to guide his family, reminding them always to choose peace and embrace the joy of life. He will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Visitation will be held on July 24, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM at the Thibadeau Mortuary Chapel in Gaithersburg, Maryland.
