Kathleen Thomas Lowe

May 29, 1943 - June 29, 2025

Kathleen T. Lowe, aged 82, passed peacefully to be with her Lord on Sunday, June 29, 2025, with her husband by her side. She is lovingly remembered by her husband of 24 years, Thomas Lowe, sisters Janice Thomas and Patsy Ringler; daughter, Kate Dowd; son, Tim (Sabrina) Dowd, stepdaughter Abby (Sam) Minnick, stepsons Ben (Megan) Lowe and Jonathan (Denise) Lowe, grandchildren Cailin and Timothy Dowd, Rachel and Zachary Minnick, and Elizabeth, John, Abraham, David and Maggie Lowe.

Kathy was born in the Territory of Hawaii on May 29, 1943, in the time of blackouts following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Her father’s career as a Navy captain led to Kathy living in various locations, including Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Japan and Maryland.

After graduating from Walter Johnson High School in 1961, she enrolled in the School of Nursing at Washington Hospital Center, earning her diploma in 1964.

Kathy was a deeply caring nurse, who advocated for her patients. She was part of only two pilot programs in the country at the time to put specially trained cardiac nurses and doctors out of the hospital and into the field. She cherished her time working on the Heart Mobile with the Montgomery County Heart Association running out of Holy Cross Hospital. Kathy served in Washington Adventist Hospital, St. Agnes Hospital, Montgomery General Hospital, Holy Cross Hospital (Silver Spring), and Suburban Hospital, in the surgical intensive care unit, coronary intensive care, and emergency room. In addition, Kathy volunteered in the health room at her children’s school.

Even while she was busy nursing Kathy spent several years helping on the family farm in Woodbine, Maryland. She helped with all the animals, raised several litters of puppies and “knew every bump and dip” after spending countless hours on the tractor.

In 1980, Kathy embraced sobriety and joined AA. She was very proud of her decade’s long sobriety. It was through AA that she met her second husband, Tom Lowe. They married in 2000.

She had been a devoted member of Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church for 25 years, serving on various committees and programs. Kathy loved reading and writing poetry, and hand making beautiful personal cards for all occasions.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, July 25 at 2:00 at Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church, with a reception to follow. The family asks that bright colors (or animal prints) be worn to match Kathy’s personality. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to ACLU, ASPCA or Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church. If you do wish to send flowers, the church recommends the use of Worldwide Flowers.

We invite you to join us in celebrating Kathleen's life on this dedicated webpage. Your condolences, stories, videos and pictures will be cherished by the family and provide comfort during this difficult time.
