Jon Max Shepard, a beloved educator and family man, peacefully departed this world on October 31, 2024, in Gaithersburg, Maryland, at the age of 85. Born on July 15, 1939, in Ashland, Kentucky, Jon’s journey was marked by profound contributions to the lives of countless students and an enduring love for his family.
Growing up, Jon loved playing sports and became a scholarship football player and 440 track man at Georgetown College. He earned his PhD from Michigan State University, where he discovered a real passion for teaching. He spent years as a professor of sociology and of business ethics at the University of Kentucky and Virginia Tech. Among his many accolades, he received the Greatest Teacher Award at UK. As an administrator, he was known as a voice of understanding and reason at both UK and VT. He also authored many books and articles, including twelve editions of a widely used sociology textbook.
Jon was a very rare combination of stoic strength, serious intellect, boundless curiosity, quick wit, and deep empathy for others. Even years after his retirement, he continued to receive heartfelt messages of gratitude for his advice, support, and caring from former students, colleagues, and friends.
He had a rich life outside academia as well. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His 63-year marriage to his wife Kay, was special and flourished throughout the decades. Jon adored his son, Jon, and his beautiful granddaughter, Ava, and found great meaning and joy in helping them to grow and thrive. He also loved the game of golf and was tireless in his pursuit of "the golf swing."
Jon is survived by his loving wife, Kay; son, Jon; daughter-in-law, Samantha Williams; granddaughter, Ava; sister, Anne Anderson; brothers, Dick and Harry Shepard; and his wonderful nieces and nephews, Chris, Chari, Jimmy, Julie, and Michael. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mabel and Max Shepard, and his niece, Lisa.
As we remember Jon, we celebrate a life full of love, humor, and scholarship. Forever cherished, he will be deeply missed by his family and friends, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
