William Anton Sandrin

June 19, 1941 — April 6, 2023

William “Bill” Anton Sandrin, 81, of Gaithersburg, MD passed away Thursday , April 6, 2023. Bill was born on June 19, 1941 in Brooklyn, NY to Anton and Aline Sandrin and grew up in Orleans, Vermont. He graduated from University of Vermont and achieved a Masters of Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.


Bill worked as a Principal Scientist at COMSAT Laboratories for over 30 years. He is credited with numerous publications in the field of communications satellites. Prior to COMSAT, Bill worked at Boeing in Seattle on various projects including the Apollo program.


Bill was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his sister Kathy Rice. He was married for 56 years to his loving wife Roberta Sandrin, who survives him. Other survivors include his two children: Jill Roach (Kevin) of Germantown, MD, and Alan Sandrin (Nikki) of Carolina Beach, NC; and 4 grandchildren: Hannah Roach, Jeffrey Roach, Carson Sandrin, and Ryan Sandrin.


A celebration of life service for family and friends will be held at a later date.


Bill loved traveling and traveled the world with great energy and enthusiasm for both work and pleasure. In his youth he worked on ships and submarines including a trans-Atlantic cruise where he served caviar to the Shah of Iran. He enjoyed spending time with his family, his Siamese cats, and grand puppies. He was an avid swimmer and photographer, and enjoyed archiving the family photos and doing occasional carpentry. He also enjoyed British comedies, New Orleans jazz music, and was great at trivia. His family treasured his unique combination of humor, wit, and wisdom.
