Roberta Spillan Poffenberger

September 4, 1934 — December 4, 2022

Roberta Charlotte Poffenberger (nee Spillan), passed peacefully surrounded by family at her daughter’s home on Sunday December 4, 2022. She is dearly beloved by all in her family, and will be remembered fondly by many friends and colleagues of all ages.

Roberta is predeceased by her mother Charlotte Spillan (nee Snyder), father (Charles Spillan), sister Terry Perkins and son-in-law Robert. P. Wade, Jr. She is survived by her husband, Kiehl Poffenberger, her three children Kimber (Ifor), Eric (Patricia) and Dana (Jaime), three grandchildren Adam, Katharine and James (Sharon), her great-granddaughter, Charlotte, a niece and nephews, grand-niece/nephews and extended cousins.

Roberta brought a zest for life to everything she did, from anchoring family events (including Easter egg coloring parties and epic egg hunts), to baking dozens of Christmas cookies each December, to caring for her beloved dogs Mac and Pepper. She never had to practice kindness; it was simply a part of who she was.

She spent most of her life in Hagerstown Maryland, where she was a cheerleader at Hagerstown High, Sunday School teacher at Trinity Lutheran Church, and active with The Potomac Playmakers. She worked as a homemaker and bank teller and built a career as a paralegal and title examiner in Montgomery and Howard counties. Late in life she moved away from her hometown and lifelong friends to help raise her grandchildren.

Roberta was a wonderful cook and baker and knew her way around a sewing machine. She could twirl a Terrible Towel with style, during the many years she was a passionate Pittsburgh Steelers fan. In recent years she was an avid reader of the newspaper, devotee of the Food Network and HGTV, and spent many happy hours laughing with her wonderful caregiver, Rosemary.

Her smile lit up the room, as well as our lives, and she made everyone feel welcomed wherever she was. She is deeply missed.

A memorial service is being planned in the spring. Friends and family are welcome to leave messages and encouraged to share fond memories.
