Robert Swinehart

Bob Swinehart passed away on Dec 6, 2020 at the age of 78. He loved all things design, teaching, a nice glass of wine, providing advice, and spending time with friends and family.

Bob was a professor of Communication Design in the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University for 36 years. He taught students the importance of problem framing, critical thinking, and design process. He encouraged his students never to stop at the first or tenth solution, but to push through to the 100th.

Among his many achievements, Bob had his work exhibited in major shows around the world and housed in the permanent collection of the US Library of Congress. He was a lifetime honorary member of the American Center for Design (ACD) and the Society of Typographic Arts (STA). He was a past President of the Graphic Design Education Association (GDEA), past President and Laureate of the International Institute of Information Design (IIID), and a member of the national board of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA). He also maintained an iconic mustache.

Bob is survived by his wife, Suzanne, daughters Cori Schauer (Brandon), Stacey Swinehart Ganderson (Josh), grandchildren Sam and Freya and his brother Jack Swinehart.
