Mary "Bussy" Elizabeth Thompson

September 10, 1944 — November 14, 2023

Mary Elizabeth Thompson, also known to her family as “Bussy”, daughter of Colonel Alfred “Frank” Thompson (U.S.A. retired) and Betty Thompson, was born in San Antonio, TX on September 10th, 1944. Bussy’s fondest memories and greatest adventures stem from growing up with her siblings as military dependents while their father served in the U.S.A, living in several overseas locations (Japan, then Germany) in the post-WWII era, as well as stateside assignments. After graduating from Sierra Vista High School in AZ in 1962, Bussy attended Arizona State University in Flagstaff for one year before moving to Washington D.C. in 1963. While in Washington D.C., she met and married Major Robert Noonan (U.S.A.) of Cincinnati, OH, producing the greatest joys of her life, her four children.

After leaving the Army, the Noonan family moved to Cincinnati, OH, then back to MD, where they stayed and raised their children. Bussy and Robert Noonan divorced in 1979. Bussy raised her children while becoming active in several churches and holding several jobs. Later in life, she attended Montgomery College in Rockville, MD for a two-year associate’s program in mental health where she was a 4.0 student and served the local prison community. Bussy’s primary skill set was as a caregiver of others, focusing on elderly and stray animals, taking care of several persons and strays over her lifetime. Her hobbies included practicing healthy eating and avidly studying the bible.

After suffering a stroke in 2021, Bussy entered long-term care, receiving many visits from her siblings, children, and grandchildren. Bussy quietly departed on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at the Shady Grove Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Shady Grove, MD.

Bussy’s life will be forever cherished and remembered by her siblings, Janis Hamlin of Alexandria, VA, Tom Thompson, of Batesville, AR, and Nan Ernst, of Miami, FL. and her four children; Robert Noonan of Point of Rocks, MD, Charles Noonan of Fulton, MD, Bridgit Avon of Lewes, DE, and Joseph Noonan.

She will also be remembered by her eight grandchildren; Anna Machak, Christian Noonan, Sydney Babyak, Connor Noonan, Isaac Avon, Katelyn Avon, Logan Noonan, and Sawyer Noonan and her three great-grandchildren Jackson Sherman, Rhyan Sherman and Bailey Mae Sherman, as well as by her nephew, Adam Hamlin and nieces Amanda Scheps, Kelly Saunders, Madison Thompson, and Lee Weirich. She will also be missed and remembered by a host of devoted cousins and friends.
