Luella Everetta Whitaker Armstrong, the oldest of four children to James and Sallie Whitaker, Born September 28, 1922, was called to rest Sunday, December 6, 2009 after a long, active, healthy life. In 1931 her family moved from Enfield, NC to Washington, DC where she graduated from Shaw Junior High School in 1936, Cardoza Senior High School in 1940, and Howard University in 1944, while attending Vermont Avenue Baptist Church. Immediately thereafter, she and Ernest Webster Armstrong were married in Rankin Chapel at Howard University, their marriage lasting until 1976. From this union 3 children were born: Ernest Jr. who died in 1967, Earl Magnus, and Everett Whitaker. Luella was a loving and supportive wife, traveling with her husband and family during his twenty year military career to such near and distant places as Seattle, WA; Ft. Leonardwood, MO; extensively in Europe twice; Washington, DC twice; and Ft. Sill, OK. In 1971 she settled into her home in Catonsville, MD, earned the Master of Arts degree in English from Towson State University, and began a distinguished teaching career in the Baltimore City and Baltimore County school system. Luella loved teaching, mentoring, and motivating her students. In later years she could travel nowhere in public without being recognized by former students and profusely thanked for her attentive and supportive ways. She cherished the Cardoza High School class of 1940 reunions; the Howard University Alumni Association activities; landscaping and gardening at her home. Most importantly, she maintained her personal relationship with God, attending Sunday worship services and Wednesday bible study at Morning Star Baptist Church in Catonsville, MD. Luella is celebrated by her sons Earl and Everett. Grandmother to Earl, Julie, James, Megan, and Joseph. Sister to Vernal James, Madgie Giddens and Otis Whitaker. Mother-in-law to Patricia and Jean. See will also be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members and friends. May God continue to bless Luella Armstrong and all who love her.
