BARBARA THOMSON FOWNES
Barbara Thomson Fownes, a long-time resident of Stamford, Greenwich & Norwalk died on Saturday, June 12 in Washington D. C. She was 80. She had most recently lived on Hilton Head Island.
Mrs. Fownes was born November 4, 1929 to Wilfrid & Helen Thomson, who had moved to Stamford from Toronto. She graduated from Low Heywood School, then located on Shippan Point, and attended Bradford Junior College.
She married Lawrence G. Fownes, of N.Y.C. & Stamford in 1950. They were to have celebrated 60 years of marriage this October. Barbara was a wonderful mother, grand-mother, as well as an avid reader, traveler and enjoyed painting. She was an early member of the Junior League, a volunteer at the Telfair Museum in Savannah and the Bargain Box on Hilton head.
She is survived by her three children; Carolyn Fownes Dunne of Chevy Chase, MD, Peter Fownes of Miami, FL and Richard Fownes of Duxbury MA. In addition she had 8 grandchildren. Barbara’s two brothers are Robert Thomson of Wayne, PA and William Thomson of Norwalk, CT.
She died while battling Wegener’s disease and complications arising from it. She was predeceased by her husband Larry, who died from emphysema on June 4, 2010. In lieu of flowers please make any donations to Vasculitis Foundation @ www.vasculitisfoundation.org.
They will both be remembered at a memorial service in Stamford at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 4 P. M. on Wednesday July 14, 2010, to be followed by a reception at the Stamford Yacht Club.
